Our teachers are our biggest asset. They choose to teach at Seattle Waldorf School because our experiential emphasis allows for so much more than just an intellectual understanding of facts.
The comprehensive Waldorf teacher training that our teachers have received provides an in-depth understanding of the philosophical foundation of Waldorf Education,SM intensive experience with the arts as a path of self-development, and the opportunity to learn and practice the art and science of Waldorf pedagogy – often as an additon to more conventional teacher education. This extensive training gives our faculty a very deep understandnig of how to really engage their students and foster their growth into balanced young people who are confident in virtually any arena, and able to thrive in society. Additionally, our faculty regularly participate in professional development courses to further their teaching expertise.
In Waldorf grade schools, the class teacher usually teaches the class of students from first through eighth grade, and the teacher accepts extensive and extended responsibility for the students as their main instructor. In this model, emotional ties are fostered, the students and teacher deepen their understanding of one another, and individual learning styles are well-known and addressed throughout the students’ education. Specialty subjects, such as world languages, strings, band and handwork, are taught by specialists.
The Waldorf early chilhood program is structured differently from the grade school. The teacher does not move up with the children, but instead continues teaching the same age range of students each year. Because of the mixed age range of each class, there is a great deal of continuity from year to year for the child. The expertise of our early childhood teachers makes them a great resource for parents seeking a path of conscious parenting.
