My wish for all children is a healthy environment in which to grow and thrive along with a peace-seeking world looking for civil discourse and reconciliation, valuing the unique parts of each human, and finding love.

We all share a desire, I think, for our children to be safe and healthy, and to become full, joyful people who contribute to our world. It is the Power of Community that will bring us through these unprecedented times. I want you to know that the faculty and staff of SWS are working hard to support our students. We have consulted experts on all aspects of COVID-19 management; we are evaluating future use of COVID-19 testing,  identifying ways to modify our outdoor spaces for year-round learning, and working to support our faculty and staff. We, too, wish that we could be together all of the time and we continue to look for ways to bring our community together.

Part of supporting our children to become confident, creative, and thoughtful adults is modeling for them respectful, civil discourse. What a time we are living in! Our faculty, including our school counselor, Lynne Hakim, and Director of DEI, Paul Johnson, are prepared to hold our students, especially our older learners, through the election and into the coming months. We have a commitment to diversity and we acknowledge that what makes our community special and unique are the people who have different and varied points of view. We strive to model for our students responsive ways to engage during this tenuous time.

As I head into this weekend—Halloween, the time change, and a national election, I am reminded of an old song, “Turn! Turn! Turn!” by the Byrds. It’s the final verse that seems so fitting.

A time to gain, a time to lose
A time to rend, a time to sew
A time for love, a time for hate
A time for peace, I swear it’s not too late

May this season bring us continued strength to face obstacles with courage and grace.

In peace,
Raquel
