At Seattle Waldorf School, learning is collaborative, experiential, and hands-on.
“Many parents would likely object if, say, Exxon Mobil wrote their children’s environmental science curriculum. Or if Purdue Pharma trained their children’s biology teachers,” writes journalist Natasha Singer in the article “How Big Tech Captured American Schools” in the New York Times. “Yet, over the last decade, schools have often embraced the technology industry in similar ways with few questions asked.”
As author of the book “Coding Kids: Big Tech’s Battle to Remake Public Schools,” Singer has spent years examining how the tech industry moved swiftly into mainstream classrooms, dramatically altering the educational experience for students as young as kindergarten. Importantly, as many researchers and educators have reported, the introduction of educational technology has sidelined the real human-to-human interactions that drive meaningful learning.
Seattle Waldorf School provides a well-rounded and human-centered education where students are taught face-to-face, not via smart boards and screens. Through intentionally small class sizes, a low teacher-to-student ratio, and stable class cohorts, our faculty prioritizes real-world and collaborative learning. Rather than relying on instructional apps and devices, teachers plan lessons and guide classroom dynamics in accordance with their student’s unique personalities, needs, and interests.
Families are drawn to our school because of our intentional and slow approach to digital technology. Classes are phone and app free. In middle school, we thoughtfully introduce our Cyber Civics course, providing instruction in digital literacy, responsible citizenship, and online safety, building a strong basis for responsible technology use in high school and beyond.

At Seattle Waldorf School, learning is dynamic, experiential, and collaborative, ensuring that each student’s intellectual, social, and emotional capacities flourish. By slowing the introduction of technology, our students build a strong foundation of cooperation, collaboration, listening and advocacy skills, resilience, curiosity, and critical thinking. At Seattle Waldorf School, we know that these capacities will help them thrive no matter the future.
