From the I to the We: co-creating a loving and equitable community In the first of this three-part series, we will come together to lay the foundation for the generative work we seek to engage in collectively this year at SWS. To create a school community that prioritizes equity, diversity, and inclusion, those at the table will create a culture of love, safety, and authenticity. In this way, we will come together to learn and practice ways to partake in breakthrough conversations and offer support to each other as we expand our capacity for growth toward justice and liberation. We look forward to entering into this work of creating a loving and equitable world together! Guest Facilitators Victoria Reyes has been a Waldorf teacher for 17 years and serves on the Pedagogical Section Council and the AWSNA board of trustees. As of 2022, Victoria transitioned from full-time teaching to a career as an independent Waldorf consultant and mentor. She is passionate about helping Waldorf school communities pause for reflection as they grow into the future with intention and awareness. Victoria values the deep traditional wisdom in Waldorf culture. She believes, however, that like much of society, we must now reconcile spaces where we have been on autopilot and blindly behaving based on our inheritance of structures which are still often subtly based on Western dualistic notions of superiority/inferiority. Victoria believes there is no such thing as a unilinear trajectory to a completed mission in this work. Instead, there is a practice of inquiry to take up, to consistently grow and evolve in every direction of healthy connection and relationships with ourselves and others. Aimee de Ney is a long time Waldorf early childhood teacher working with supporting young children and their families to develop reciprocal and loving relationships with the land and her inhabitants, primarily at her school Bird Song Children’s Garden on the shores of the Salish Sea in Olympia. Also a puppeteer, storyteller, and student of the land, Aimee is a doctoral candidate whose research centers on developing prek-undergrad pedagogy that prioritizes generating loving and healing relationships with the land, other and self through Land education. In this, the intersections between social justice and land justice meet in the dismantling of settler colonialism through truth telling, storying, somatic embodiment, and learning new ways of being as members of the ecosystem of life. Aimee is currently serving as our region’s representative to WECAN and on the WECAN I.D.E.A. committee.

With a shift in any and all of the above as authentic relationships dive beneath the surface, the power and harm caused by the legacy of racism can be dismantled.
